Ready to breed? Jump to the parent checklist, treat budget and four-day walkthrough. You can keep using this same page for daily care and product information afterward.
Before you start: make today’s ranch route visible
Start outside the Barn or Coop that contains your animals. Open the Animal menu once and count the occupied spaces before buying an animal or giving breeding treats. On PC, use the command currently assigned to the on-screen Pet, Feed, and building-entry prompts; these names stay useful after a player changes key bindings in Controls.
Prerequisites
- For daily care, the animal must already live in a Barn or Coop and you need suitable food available.
- For breeding, both parents must be adults of the same species, opposite sexes, at least 2 hearts, housed together, with one unused building space.
- For an outdoor routine, check the day’s weather first. Keep the indoor route when the weather is unsuitable.
- CheckReview today’s animal and breeding goal outside the building.
- CarePet and feed every animal in the building.
- CollectPick up Produce on the return pass.
- ConfirmUse the status and completion checks below.
Daily care in the order that prevents missed actions
- Enter every occupied Barn and Coop and Pet each animal.
- Provide suitable food in the feed spot or hand-feed the animal. Check the animal's feeding status; an empty trough alone does not prove it was unfed, because food may already have been eaten.
- Let animals outside only in good weather. Going outside adds Heart Points; bring them back in when the weather is unsuitable.
- Collect Produce and place quest, recipe, and museum items in labeled storage before selling the remainder.
- Count housing spaces before buying or breeding. Breeding needs one empty space for the offspring.
For outdoor care, sunny days and spring/fall windy days are suitable. Keep livestock indoors during rain, snow, storms and blizzards, feeding them by hand or in the trough. Bring them inside before the day ends: animals left outside overnight do not produce, in addition to losing Heart Points. See Animals and Weather.
What actually raises or lowers animal hearts
| Action or missed care | Heart Points |
|---|---|
| Pet by hand | +5 |
| Feed | +5 |
| Go outside in good weather | +5 |
| Play with toys | +2 |
| Offspring born | +10 |
| Finish the day without petting | −5 |
| Finish the day without feeding | −5 |
| Leave outside overnight | −5 |
| Go outside in bad weather | −5 |
Feeding and petting on the same day adds a further +2, so normal hand petting plus feeding totals 12 points, before other bonuses. Missing both costs 10 points. Bring animals inside before leaving them overnight; do not assume yesterday's care covers today.
The Animal Sprite Statue marks animals as petted but does not grant the hand-petting +5. Once it has marked them, you cannot earn those five hand-petting points that day. Feeding still gives +5 and activates the +2 care bonus, for 7 points from that combination. It saves a daily action but is not identical to hand petting for heart growth.
Hand-feeding the following items adds these extra points on top of feeding, not replacement totals:
| Hand-fed item | Extra points | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Quality Small/Large Animal Feed | +1 | Appropriate animal feed |
| Deluxe Small/Large Animal Feed | +3 | Appropriate animal feed |
| Ultimate Small/Large Animal Feed | +5 | Appropriate animal feed |
| Eligible crops or forage | +5 | Must be a crop/forage the animal accepts; not every item qualifies |
| One-star cooked dish | +5 | Currency of Care III |
| Two-star cooked dish | +6 | Currency of Care III |
| Three-star cooked dish | +7 | Currency of Care III |
| Four-star cooked dish | +8 | Currency of Care III |
| Five-star cooked dish | +9 | Currency of Care III |
For example, hand petting and hand-feeding Quality feed give 5 + 5 + 2 + 1 = 13 points, before outdoor, toy or skill bonuses. Check the ranching skill reference for additional perk effects instead of treating them as part of this base table.
Completion check
Finish the route by checking each animal's Pet and feeding status, rather than trough fullness alone, and collecting available Produce. For breeding, return to the Animal menu after both treats; the stork icon is the confirmation that the pair started the four-day process. If that icon is absent, do not wait four days—use the symptom table below before spending more treats.
Heart Point thresholds and production changes
| Heart level reached | Total Heart Points required |
|---|---|
| 1 | 100 |
| 2 | 220 |
| 3 | 360 |
| 4 | 520 |
| 5 | 700 |
| 6 | 900 |
| 7 | 1100 |
| 8 | 1330 |
| 9 | 1560 |
| 10 | 1800 |
Production changes at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 hearts. Two hearts adds a 20% chance for one extra regular product; four hearts gives two regular products. Six hearts gives two products plus a 20% chance for another. Eight hearts gives two regular products and a 10% Golden-product chance. Ten hearts guarantees one Golden product and adds a 10% chance for another Golden product.

New livestock need time to mature: three days for Coop animals, five for Barn animals. Once mature and properly cared for, use these production intervals:
| Animal | Production interval |
|---|---|
| Female chicken, female duck, female cow | Daily |
| Male chicken, male duck, bull, horse, sheep, rabbit, alpaca, capybara | Every three days |
Do not expect a new baby or a three-day producer to give an item every morning. Check maturity, feeding and overnight housing before treating an empty collection as a bug.
Use the filters for animal, Barn or Coop, product type, and name. The result includes the normal product, Golden version, and both sell prices.

Breed an animal without wasting treats
Check all six conditions before feeding either parent:
- Same species.
- Different sexes: one male and one female.
- Both are mature and have at least 2 hearts.
- Both live in the same Barn or Coop.
- The building has at least one additional empty space.
- Both receive their species' Heart Shaped Treat on the same day.
A stork icon in the Animal menu confirms that breeding started. Birth or hatching occurs after 4 in-game days. Gender and color are locked when the treats are eaten, so reloading after the birth does not reroll those results.
Buy the correct pair of treats
Go to Hayden's Shop at Sweetwater Farm after unlocking the animal species. Buy two matching Heart Shaped Treats, one for each parent; feed and pet treats for other purposes do not replace them.
| Species | One Heart Shaped Treat | Two for a pairing |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken | 150t | 300t |
| Duck | 225t | 450t |
| Rabbit or Capybara | 300t | 600t |
| Cow or Sheep | 300t | 600t |
| Horse or Alpaca | 390t | 780t |
These are base shop prices. Discount Treats reduces them by 10%; for example, two Cow Treats cost 540t instead of 600t. The total covers treats only, not adopting the parents or building their home.
From feeding to birth
- Outside the parents' Barn or Coop, open the Journal with Esc on default PC controls and select Animals. Confirm each parent's species, sex, maturity and 2-heart minimum, then check that their shared home has a spare space.
- Select the species' Heart Shaped Treat on the toolbar, approach the first parent and follow its feeding prompt. Default Interact is E / right-click; if your bindings differ, use the key shown beside the prompt.
- Give the second parent the other treat before ending the same day. Open Animals again and look for the stork icon beside their status; this confirms a successful start.
- Mark that as day 0 and continue daily care while keeping the spare space. The offspring arrives 4 in-game days later; for example, a successful start on Spring 10 gives an expected arrival on Spring 14.
- Check the new baby's entry and occupied housing space. A newborn still needs to mature; Coop animals take 3 days, Barn animals 5 days, and future breeding also requires 2 hearts.
While expecting, the parents cannot be sold, moved to another farm building or placed in daycare. Arrange their home before giving treats; lack of a stork icon means you should check the conditions now rather than simply wait four days.
Incubators need a breeding egg, not ordinary produce
An ordinary collected egg cannot replace the hatchable egg from the breeding process. Prepare the eligible pair and matching treats; hatching follows the four-day breeding timer, not an extra four-day wait after that.
| Coop size | Incubators | Animal capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 1 | 4 |
| Medium | 2 | 8 |
| Large | 4 | 12 |
Incubators do not add housing capacity. Keep a space for the new animal, and move residents to another suitable building or daycare before relocating an empty Coop; expecting animals cannot be moved. These capacities follow the Coop reference.

To relocate a building, first move every resident to another compatible building or Hayden's daycare. An expecting animal cannot be moved. Interact with the empty building and remove it; the game drops its blueprint and construction materials. Pick them up and place the blueprint at the new farm location. Removing the building is therefore a relocation procedure, not a second purchase.
Choose colors after the first successful pairing
| Parent color tiers | Possible offspring | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| T1 + T1 through T4 + T4 | Next tier | Ordinary matching tiers advance one tier; seasonal rules follow below. |
| T(x) + T(x+1), lower parent T1–T3 | T(x+1) or T(x+2) | Adjacent ordinary tiers can keep the higher tier or advance once more. |
| T4 + T5 | T6 chance | Seasonal offspring are possible, not guaranteed. |
| T5 + T5 | T6 chance | The seasonal T6 result is possible but not guaranteed. |
| T5 + T6 | T6 chance | A T6 parent alone does not guarantee seasonal offspring. |
| T6 + T6 | T6 guaranteed | The offspring matches the season in which the parents conceived it. |
Animal color is cosmetic. It does not change product type, value, or production cycle.

Breed a chicken from each tier, then speak to the Chicken Statue on Hayden's farm. The Wiki lists this as the condition for receiving the Big Egg, once per save.
Hold and use the egg with the displayed Interact binding to unlock additional Mistmare appearances. It cannot be sold or gifted and is not an ordinary cooking egg. The page says one chicken per tier appears sufficient; it does not require every colour within each tier. Big Egg revision 63227.

All skill trees: levels, Essence and exact effects
For Farming, Mining, Fishing, Cooking and the other trees, use this complete catalogue rather than the Ranching-only table above. Select Skill tree, then level or tier, or search a perk's name. Each entry includes its verified effect and source; do not assume a similarly named perk affects every animal or tool.
The complete catalogue lists names, trees, tiers, level gates and Essence costs. Verified effects are displayed and searchable; entries without a reliable source are never filled with guesses or placeholders.

- Pet skins can now drop from defeated monsters, allowing your pet to take on a monster's appearance.
- Care takes too long: Feeding Frenzy, Close Bond, Feed Prepper, The Bell Tolls, and Close Bond II shorten or reward the daily loop.
- You want more products: choose the Barnyard Bounty perk that names animals you own; Eggstra matters only after Gold Eggs are available.
- You are breeding: Welcome Home I/II improves starting hearts and Discount Treats reduces Hayden's Heart Shaped Treat prices by 10%.
Troubleshooting: If ranching fails, check the visible symptom
| Symptom | Check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No Produce | Feed status, maturity, and production cycle | Feed today, confirm the animal is adult, then wait for its listed production day. |
| Hearts barely move | Pet/Feed icons and outdoor weather | Pet and feed daily; add outdoor time only in good weather and use toys when available. |
| Treats do not start breeding | Species, sex, hearts, building, free space, same-day timing | Fix the failed condition before buying another pair of treats. |
| No stork icon | Animal menu after both treats | Keep both parents in the building and feed the correct species treats on the same day. |
| No seasonal T6 baby | Parent tiers and conception season | T5 pairings only give a chance; use T6 + T6 for a guaranteed T6 result. |
| A skill gives no benefit | Trigger in the full skill description | Match the skill to its named animals or action. |
Adopt a pet and collect its daily delivery
The Pet Dream can occur from Spring 7, Year 1. Choose your cat or dog in the dream and look for it at home the next morning. This is a separate system from buying Barn or Coop animals.
- Open Journal → Animals, select the pet and assign wood, stone or seasonal forage collection.
- Check the weather. Pets work on sunny or spring/fall windy days; rain, snow and storms keep them indoors.
- Return to the Farmhouse in the evening for the delivery. Changing jobs does not provide a second collection that day.
- Pet it daily and give either Cat Treat or Dog Treat to raise hearts; both treat types work for cats and dogs. Pets do not require daily feeding or manual herding indoors.
| Job | Where the pet works | Delivery range |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Town | 2–15 Wood |
| Stone | The Narrows | 2–15 Stone |
| Seasonal forage | Eastern Road | 1–4 forageables |
Higher hearts increase deliveries. If nothing arrives, check the assigned job and today's weather before buying furniture; a pet bed is not a work requirement.
Change your pet without adopting another one
Open Journal → Animals → your pet to change its name, species, colour or job. The starting cat and dog each have 12 colour choices, and you can change those choices later. Switching jobs does not create a second delivery that day.
All 24 starting pet appearances
These are the original cat and dog choices, not monster skins requiring Friend-Shaped. Compare the sprites, then change species and colour in your pet's Animals entry. You do not have to adopt again to try another starting appearance.

Appearance names and exact game sprite identities follow Pets, revision 62565. Artwork © NPC Studio. The table is an appearance reference, not a ranking of job performance.
To dress the pet, check the pet-cosmetic rewards for a 10-bead Chicken Statue offering in the world reference. A reward is random. The collection catalogue records individual Pet Bed, Pet Dish and Mist Pet Bed sources; placing pet furniture in a farmhouse room can make the pet spend time there, but does not make a rainy day a workday. These controls and limits follow Pets revision 62565.
Install an Auto Feeder in a large building
Reach Ranching level 45, read Hayden's letter, and buy an Auto Feeder for 5,000t from his shop. It only fits a Large Barn or Large Coop.
- Enter the large building and find the small platform beside the chest in the southeast corner.
- Place one feeder there. A building supports only one.
- Load its 54-slot inventory with feed or edible items. Keep valuable ingredients out unless you want them converted.
- Return the next morning and inspect the trough. The feeder fills empty trough slots; it does not perform hand-feeding.
- Continue petting animals. The hand-feeding benefit of Currency of Care III does not apply to automatic trough filling.
The conversion uses the first matching rule below. A Coop produces small-animal feed and a Barn produces large-animal feed.
| Input | Feed grade |
|---|---|
| Existing animal feed | Keeps its grade |
| Fruit-tree fruit | Ultimate |
| Bush forageables | Normal |
| Crop without a seed form | Quality |
| Seed-grown crop that does not regrow | Deluxe |
| Seed-grown crop with regrowth of at least seven days | Ultimate |
| Other crops | Quality |
| One-star cooked dish | Quality |
| Cooked dish with another star value | Ultimate |
| Other eligible input | Normal |
You can load cooked dishes without Currency of Care III. That perk is required for hand-feeding dishes, not for stocking the machine. Existing small-animal feed can also be converted into same-grade large-animal feed in a Barn, and vice versa in a Coop. Currency of Care II can still award Shiny Beads if the animal has also been petted that day. These distinctions follow Auto Feeder revision 62994.
Set up an Animal Sprite Statue
The statue handles the petting check for animals in a Large Barn or Large Coop. It does not fill their troughs or grant the normal hand-petting Heart Points.
- Complete Breaking the Fire Seal to obtain Dragon's Breath. Then go to the cave left of Errol's Cabin in The Narrows, south of the Museum. Its Gold Chest contains the statue and its crafting recipe. This is a different location from the Beach Cave Water Sprite Statue chest.
- For another statue, reach Woodcrafting level 20 and bring 10 Refined Stone, 50 Essence and 3 Shiny Beads to the crafting station. The base crafting time is 30 minutes.
- Place the statue inside the large animal building and add an Essence Stone to power it. Loose Essence in the recipe does not replace the fuel item. Use the Essence Stone recipes to prepare a supply.
- Check the animals' care status. The statue marks them as petted, preventing the 5-point loss for ending the day unpetted. If you want the hand-petting gain, use manual care instead; the statue does not provide that gain.
- Check food separately. Keep troughs stocked manually or use the Auto Feeder above. A petting statue does not supply meals.
The recipe, building restriction and petting effect are recorded in Animal Sprite Statue revision 60352; the Narrows Cave entry supplies the location and spell prerequisite.
Cat Treat and Dog Treat are not breeding treats
Both pet-treat types work on either kind of pet. Buy them from Hayden for 100t, or use the Mill: Smallmouth Bass → Cat Treat, Trout → Dog Treat. Confirm the displayed batch quantity before processing fish reserved for a Museum set.
These increase pet affection, not the breeding process for barn/coop animals. Most villagers dislike them as gifts; Hayden is neutral, while Dozy loves Dog Treat. Do not infer a person's preference from the treat's name.
Choose food for Shiny Beads
Unlock Currency of Care before collecting livestock feeding beads. Currency of Care II can add beads to regular produce when animals are fed and petted; Currency of Care III is required for cooked dishes. The quantities below are beads from the listed food, not heart points or automatic-feeder output. They follow Shiny Bead revision 62590.
- Keep Museum donations, quest ingredients and food you need for recovery aside. Choose a spare item from the tables.
- Select the item and hand-feed the livestock using the interaction prompt. Check the dropped beads before trying a more valuable ingredient.
- Save beads for the Chicken Statue's 10- and 100-bead reward pools. A bead sells for only 1t; Henrietta also loves it as a gift.
Feed, animal products and cooked dishes
| Food | Beads per listed food |
|---|---|
| Hay; Grass Seed | 1 |
| Quality Small Animal Feed; Quality Large Animal Feed | 2 |
| Deluxe Small Animal Feed; Deluxe Large Animal Feed | 3 |
| Ultimate Small Animal Feed; Ultimate Large Animal Feed | 4 |
| Egg; Duck Egg; Golden Egg; Golden Duck Egg; Milk; Golden Milk | 1 |
| 1-star cooked dish | 2 |
| 2-star cooked dish | 4 |
| 3-star cooked dish | 6 |
| 4-star cooked dish | 8 |
| 5-star cooked dish | 10 |
Golden eggs and milk give no extra beads over ordinary ones. For a bead-only goal, use surplus ordinary items first. Dish stars determine the bead count; a higher sale price within the same star tier does not improve this table's return. Use Dish stars in the recipe catalogue to choose a star tier, then compare the ingredients you have.

Other feedable items and source uncertainties
The source lists 1 bead each for Beer, Chocolate, Chicky Hot Chocolate, Coffee, Cow-Shaped Donut, Espresso, Floral Tea, Hot Toddy, Lavender Tea, Mushroom Brew, Red Wine and White Wine. Livestock hand-feeding and giving a gift to Dozy or Henrietta use different rules; do not infer pet gift eligibility from this list.
The following ten items remain unconfirmed in the source, including whether they require the cooked-dish perk. Do not spend them on a planned bead target using an assumed value: Big Cookie, Bucket Brew, Dragon Horn Mushroom with Thyme, Heavy Mist, Honey Curry, Mint Gimlet, Mixed Fruit Juice, Star-Shaped Cookie, Tulip Cake and Twice-Baked Rations.
When an animal will not accept the item
| Not hand-feedable | Items to keep out of the feeding plan |
|---|---|
| Fibers, horns and feathers, including golden variants | Alpaca Wool; Bristle; Bull Horn; Duck Feather; Horse Hair; Rabbit Wool; Rooster Feather; Sheep Wool |
| Processed animal products, including golden variants | Butter; Mayonnaise; Duck Mayonnaise; Cheese |
| Milled materials and certain crops | Flour; Rice; Sugar; Grass Starter; Rice Stalk; Tea |
| Flowers | All flower types, including Breath of Flame |
| Other materials and forage | Cattail Fluff; Chirping Fern; Curry Powder; Fiber; Holly; Honey; Premium Honey; Deluxe Honey; Legendary Honey; Narrows Moss; Pinecone; Red Toadstool; Seaweed; Thorn Vine |
For a refused cooked dish, check Currency of Care III first. For an item in the table above, switch food instead of repeatedly interacting. Grass Seed is listed as feedable; Grass Starter is not.
