Before you cast: set up the rod and the route

No rod yet? Press M to locate the Tackle Shop at the Beach and bring 500t for the Worn Fishing Rod. Select it from your hotbar and stand on the bank facing water. Instructions below use default PC bindings; use your remapped equivalent if different.

Prerequisites

  • You need a Fishing Rod and a fishable water tile within casting range.
  • Pick one water type before leaving home if you are seeking a particular fish; use the location explorer below to verify the pool.
  • Leave at least one free inventory slot for the catch and one first-copy reserve if the fish may be a Museum donation.
One fishing attempt
  1. SelectChoose the rod and confirm the intended water type.
  2. CastAim at a fishable water tile near the target shadow.
  3. WatchWait for the visible bite cue before using the catch action.
  4. SortCheck the result, then reserve any first Museum copy.

Cast without wasting stamina

Hold the charged-tool action while facing the water. The game shows a square in front of the player; a red X means that tile cannot be fished and the cast fails. Casting itself costs no stamina—stamina is spent only when a fish is successfully caught.

PC catching steps

  1. Select the rod with the mouse wheel or its hotbar number. Stand on a reachable bank.
  2. Hold left-click to inspect the landing tile, then release to cast. Reposition if a red X marks an invalid tile.
  3. Let the fish approach. Do not reel during a nibble; left-click when the “!” bite cue appears.
  4. Check the item name. Season, location, weather and shadow size must all fit your target, but matching conditions do not guarantee the next catch.

Start with one reachable water type and make several casts there. This keeps the route legible: water type affects which fish can spawn, while a catch can still be a non-fish item such as wood, glass, or a treasure box.

Choose a water route

Use this location map to decide where to cast. Mine water has its own fish pools, so treat a mine trip as a separate route rather than assuming it shares overworld catches.

This is a 4-route water guide, not a fish list. Browse all 143 fish entries →

WaterKnown locations
PondMistria, Eastern Road, and Deep Woods
RiverFarm, Mistria, Eastern Road, and The Narrows
OceanWestern Ruins and Sweetwater Farm (rod fishing only, no diving); Beach (rod fishing and diving)
Mine waterUpper Mines (2–19), Tide Caverns (21–39), Deep Earth (41–59), Lava Caves (61–79), and Ancient Ruins (81–89, 91–99)

For ocean catches, you can cast from the Beach, Western Ruins or Sweetwater Farm, but the last two locations do not allow diving. Go to the Beach when the target requires an ocean dive hole. The town fountain cannot be fished; move to an actual river or pond if the cast marker shows a red X there. These route boundaries are recorded in Fishing revision 62634.

For a mine-and-fishing day, keep the target floors and return plan in the mine preparation section.

Use shadows correctly

Dark shadows swim on fishable water. Cast near the shadow you want to test and use its size as a comparison clue, not a guaranteed identity: ordinary fish have small, medium, large, or giant shadows, and a line can still bring up a non-fish item.

Schools are worth finishing once found: a school holds 2–5 fish and disappears after all of its fish are reeled up. For a rare target, use the exact seasonal and weather rows in the legendary fish guide, not a shadow alone.

After unlocking School Crasher, swimming into a school drops half of its current fish without costing stamina. Before that perk, swimming into fish is not a replacement for casting. Frenzy can cause a new school to appear after a rod catch; it is a chance, not a guaranteed school on every cast. Ordinary dive holes also cost no stamina, which makes them a useful alternative when your energy is low.

Fish Bait and Fish Trap: two different collection routes

First distinguish bait fishing from the trap

The Museum's Fish Bait set requires rod catches, not the Fish Trap's daily haul. Prepare the required bait and a fishing rod, stand facing fishable water, and use the bait to summon a fish shadow. Switch to the rod, cast near that shadow and reel at the “!” cue. The bait summons a fish; it does not put the catch directly in your inventory.

Fish Bait set targetRequired baitShadow
Massive MinnowCommonSmall
Copper RockfishCommonMedium
Iron FishUncommonSmall
Silver SquidUncommonLarge
Golden EelRareGiant

All five are listed for any fishing location, season and weather; none is a diving catch. Bait can also attract other fish of its rarity, so match the actual catch name rather than assuming the summoned shadow must be the missing set item. Keep the first missing copy for the Museum. The Fish Trap uses a different pool below.

Bait the trap for tomorrow's collection

Repair the Beach Bridge, take one Fish Bait to the trap, add it, then return the next day to collect. It accepts one bait per day. Make bait through the Terrarium workflow.

Bait tierExclusive fish poolArtifact poolPossible box / Essence Stone
CommonBlue Crab, Bait ThiefClay Amphora, Sea GlassCopper / Tiny
UncommonSea Urchin, HakePorcelain FigureSilver / Small
RareAmberjackWorn Pendant, Message in a BottleGolden / Medium

These are possible pools, not a guaranteed bundle. Each collection has 2–4 reward slots: ocean fish, then 2–4 Water Chestnuts or Seaweed; an optional third slot chooses exclusive fish or Pirate furniture, and an optional fourth chooses a box, Essence Stone or artifact. Better bait changes eligible items, not slot count or category odds.

Ocean fish depend on the current season but not weather/time; exclusive trap fish ignore season/weather. Missing Blue Crab? Use Common bait, not Rare. Reserve new fish and artifacts for the Museum.

Wooden/Abyssal boxes and Large/Giant Essence Stones are not trap rewards. Full rules, revision 62651.

Completion check

For a normal catch, the result panel identifies what entered your inventory. For a target fish, also compare its name, the water type, and the season or weather requirement from the relevant fish record before treating the trip as complete. For a school, keep casting until the school disappears; for a Museum candidate, move one copy into a reserve before selling duplicates.

Protect Museum donations

Fish can be donated to the Museum’s Fish Wing. Before selling an unfamiliar catch, reserve one copy for its donation set; the Museum is west of Mistria in The Narrows and its wing rooms are viewable in the 1.0 release.

The Museum guide explains the four wings, set requirements, and Fish Wing rewards. This order avoids accidentally selling a one-per-save legendary fish that is needed for the Legendary Fish Set.

Open a treasure box and check its possible rewards

  1. Select the Treasure Box in your toolbar so your character is holding it. These portable boxes are different from the chests placed on mine floors.
  2. Use Held Interact. With the default PC bindings, hold E or the right mouse button. If you changed the bindings, check the matching action in Controls.
  3. Check the items received. The lists below are possible rewards, not a package of guaranteed drops, and no drop probability is published here. A blank quantity in the source stays unspecified.

Wooden, Copper, Silver and Golden boxes can contain money. The Abyssal Chest has its own reward pool and requires the relevant fishing or diving perk; reveal spoilers to see that entry. Search an item name below to find which box lists it.
